Week 8: Roles of Institutions For Sustainable Development (SDG 16 & 17)

For this week's topic, we explored the roles of institutions for sustainable development in SDG 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions) and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals). These two goals show that we need strong cooperation with each other to create a fair system and a better world.

Firstly, SDG 16 made me realize that peace is not just about not having wars, instead, it is about making sure humans feel safe, and have access to justice and fair law in the society. Institutions like the police, the courts, and schools play significant roles in protecting public safety in this country. If these institutions are corrupt, it is hard for people to trust them and give their cooperation. That is why having a trustworthy and strong institution is vital.

Apart from that, we also learned that SDG 17, focuses on working together as one. We cannot achieve the SDGs alone without any partnerships. We need global organizations such as UNESCO and the United Nations to help protect education, science, and culture around the world. These institutions work to promote peace and sustainable development for a better future. In Malaysia, we have several UNESCO World Heritage sites such as Gunung Mulu National Park, George Town, and Kota Kinabalu. These sites are protected under UNESCO to ensure their cultural and natural value does not die.

All in all, from this week’s topic, I realized that without these institutions, we cannot reach the SDGs as they are the systems and strategic necessities that help society function properly. SDG 16 and SDG 17 helped me understand that we need strong teamwork and systems to build a better society.
