Week 10: Measurement, Indices and Indicators for Sustainable Development and SDG

Image
For this week, we learned the topic of Measurement, Indices, and Indicators for Sustainable Development and SDG. The index is the instrument or mechanism used to measure any achievement in the world of academics and research. There are already a lot of indexes that have been developed to measure all sectors and aspects of life. One of them is the Malaysian Shariah Index, which refers to determining the status of the government in carrying out the administrations of the nations based on the Maqasid Shariah so that it adheres to Islamic standards. It also helps to provide future improvement that needs to be covered for the Islamic values to be truly practiced and applied in our country.  Next, we also dived into the sustainability indicators which are usually understood as a quantitative tool that analyses changes, while measuring and communicating progress toward the use of sustainability and management of economic, institutional, social as well a...

Week 9: Field Works - On Campus Observation

Image
In week 9, we learned about the topic of Field Works on Campus Observation- IIUM as a sustainable campus. In IIUM, several initiatives have been implemented to achieve sustainable development goals. One of them is IIUM Mahabbah Food Bank organised by the Minister of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs. This food bank helps to combat hunger among the students which is aligned with SDG 2 (Zero Hunger). Besides, in CFS IIUM, they had established the CFS Sejahtera Room providing free clothes and food for students in need. This initiative made by the IIUM campus aligned with the sustainable development goals to achieve a sustainable society among students. Cat shelters also had been built around the campus to ensure the sustainability of the cat population as IIUM is full of cats and they are being taken care of nicely by certain societies and clubs. This shows how IIUM provides basic needs not only for their students but for all including animals.   ...

Week 8: Roles of Institutions For Sustainable Development (SDG 16 & 17)

Image
For this week's topic, we explored the roles of institutions for sustainable development in SDG 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions) and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals). These two goals show that we need strong cooperation with each other to create a fair system and a better world.      Firstly, SDG 16 made me realize that peace is not just about not having wars, instead, it is about making sure humans feel safe, and have access to justice and fair law in the society. Institutions like the police, the courts, and schools play significant roles in protecting public safety in this country. If these institutions are corrupt, it is hard for people to trust them and give their cooperation. That is why having a trustworthy and strong institution is vital.       Apart from that, we also learned that SDG 17, focuses on working together as one. We cannot achieve the SDGs alone without any partnerships. We need global organ...

Week 7: Challenges to Sustainable Development

Image
For this week’s lessons, we started our discussion with the issue of Jalur Gemilang, illegal durian farming, and the construction of the illegal temple. Some students argued that the issue of Jalur Gemilang being upside down is not forgettable and unforgivable as it needs to be followed by legal actions by the authorities. As we all agree, Jalur Gemilang is our identity, and people need to be respectful as it is our dignity and pride. Thus, apologizing is not enough in this case. Nevertheless, some students got different opinions by saying they deserved the apology and should be given a lighter punishment. Next, regarding the issue of the construction of illegal temples and durian farming, most students agreed that the person involved should ask the owner’s permission first before doing anything to the land as it must be unfair to those who owned the property legally. Some of the students argued that they needed to get their rights on their property as I...

Week 6: Roles of Universities & Sustainable Development

Image
This week, we learned about education in IIUM and Malaysia in general. Prof Suhaimi asked us to answer 5 questions about education. The first question is “Is there anything wrong with the university’s education system now?” Some students said that the curriculum in Malaysia is not advanced and needs to be improved for a better future like the US education. The answer to the second question “Do you receive education that is needed by society's needs or what industry needs?” is society needs as some students said that IIUM education is more to teach their students to give benefits to the society. Apart from that, Prof Suhaimi also told us that we need to be balanced people depending on the situation. For instance, the wife needs to sacrifice her job to take care of their sick children in the hospital. Next, for the fourth question regarding the education that we are receiving in IIUM now, some students said that Celpad subjects are not necessary for the students...

Week 5: Sejahtera as Local Concept of Sustainable Development

Image
In week 5, Prof Suhaimi conducted the class online, and we were taught about the topic of Madani. Madani is a policy framework and government slogan introduced by the administration of the 10th Prime Minister. In this class, we learned that there are a lot of things that the government has done for the people, such as the Madani Clinic. Moreover, the goal of the Madani is to create a community that is “Sejahtera” and in harmony in every sector.      Next, we also shared our group project topic with the whole class and consulted with Prof Suhaimi. The professor did give some of us suggestions and precautions to take regarding our topic and how we could improve and do our project to be done perfectly without any problems, such as students taking the laundry basket that we provided for our project.       After we have done consulting about our topic, we continue to learn about the idea of “Sejahtera” and some of the reminders fro...

Week 4: International Framework of Sustainable Development

Image
For this week, we explored the International Framework of Sustainable Development which started in 1972 when the governments gathered in Stockholm to address the issue of global environmental needs, as well as to take part in the UN conference on the human environment. The major events such as the Kyoto Protocol and Rio de Janeiro Conference point to the growth of global awareness to balance environmental protection.       The interesting part that caught my attention is the political differences between developed and developing countries. Every country has its own challenges to environmental issues and not all of them have equal abilities to address them properly. For instance, wealthier or more developed countries tend to cause more pollution because of industrial activities and overconsumption. Malaysia, as a developing country, still struggles to adopt green practices due to limited resources.       Sejahtera, Malays...
