Week 6: Roles of Universities & Sustainable Development

This week, we learned about education in IIUM and Malaysia in general. Prof Suhaimi asked us to answer 5 questions about education. The first question is “Is there anything wrong with the university’s education system now?” Some students said that the curriculum in Malaysia is not advanced and needs to be improved for a better future like the US education. The answer to the second question “Do you receive education that is needed by society's needs or what industry needs?” is society needs as some students said that IIUM education is more to teach their students to give benefits to the society. Apart from that, Prof Suhaimi also told us that we need to be balanced people depending on the situation. For instance, the wife needs to sacrifice her job to take care of their sick children in the hospital. Next, for the fourth question regarding the education that we are receiving in IIUM now, some students said that Celpad subjects are not necessary for the students as it will only waste their study time as well as their money for the fees. Lastly, the role of Islam in the universities lies in the student's practice of Islamic practices such as time management as Islam teaches us to manage our time wisely so that we can live our life to the fullest and achieve success.

Additionally, after we finished discussing all the questions, we continued to learn about other aspects of education like education philosophy and 21st-century education, which is associated with our physical, spiritual, intellectual, and emotional to achieve “Sejahtera” in the country’s education. Moreover, we also learned about Pasca covid-19 which involved the 4H (Humanity, Heart, High Touch, and Humility). We need to have a good heart and always think positively about others. Besides, for the High Touch, we must take care of our own selves and cannot rely on the government for our lives to improve our socialization.

In a nutshell, this week's lesson opened our eyes and minds to the idea of education in IIUM and Malaysia to achieve sustainability in university education.

  4. Totally agree with that, as certain educational systems are too rigid and not adaptable to societal changes and give us no room for creative solving

  7. In my opinion, Celpad classes could be necessary in some cases to teach the students more sophisticated academic writing style.
