Week 2: Islam & Sustainable Development

For week 2, we explored sustainable development through the lens of Islam. Islam has been emphasizing the importance of taking care of our environment in the Quran and Hadith as there are numerous examples from the Prophet Muhammad’s life and his sayings that talk about this. The relationship with the environment (surrounding) is one of the fundamentals of Islam and development which shows that Islam also encourages its followers to love mother nature as we love our own self.

Furthermore, Allah has created the cosmos or nature for us to ponder upon his other creatures in this world. The trees have their own purposes as well as the wind, water, and soil. Humans need to realize that the conservation of the environment is a religious duty demanded by God and thus needs to be followed by certain actions and not to make chaos out of it. Allah said in Surah Al-Qasas verse 77, which means “And do good as Allah has been good to you. And do not seek to cause corruption in the earth. Allah does not love the corrupters.” This ayah touches upon how humans as Khalifah in this world need to take good care of this earth and not cause corruption.

After the lecture, Prof Suhaimi divided us into rooms where we were given our groupmates and discussed our position in the group. I was given to be with Group Number 2 with four other members. We discussed our position and I ended up being a leader for my group. After we had finished with the division of the group members, we ended our lecture with Tasbih Kifarah and Surah Al-Asr.
